Oxygen Sensors

Fluorescence Quenching

This is the ultimate technology for measuring oxygen. We trap a fluorescent compound in an oxygen permeable, optically clear sol gel matrix. The fluoresence of this compound is excited by a blue LED. Molecular oxygen collides with the excited state of the fluorophore and releases the enrgy non-radiatively. This queching effect is measured by phase fluorimetry, and is use to determine pO2 in the sensor

Spectrecology sells sensors based on the finest materials in the world. Our sol-gel sensor materials are the culmination of over 15 years of R&D effort. No one makes fluorescent sensors with the stability and durability of our FOXY line. Originally developed for oceanographic use, these sensors are deployed in aircraft fuel tanks, bioreactors, chemical reactors, respitory therapy devices, food and pharmaceutical packaging plants, brain tisse, soil, tree sap and even CO2 lasers.

Fiber Optic Sensors -- Small enough to fit into needles, rugged enough to fit into industrial style sensors. The sensor material is coated on the tip of the optical fiber. There are dozens of styles and options. Do you need something we don't show? We make custom work routine. Call us to tell us about your requirements.

Remote Detection -- That's right! We can sense the fluorescent decay time from a distance. Our Red Eye patches can be put on the inside of package, vial, respirometer, you name it. Point the fiber optic probe at the patch and get a fast accurate answer.

Three Formulations

  • FOXY  This is our most popular sensor material. FOXY is based on a Ruthenium organo-metallic complex. Its usefull range is 0 - 100% O2 at 1 atmosphere pressure. The sol gel formulation withstands most chemical environments (see the table below) with the exception of hysdrocarbons.
  • FOSPOR  This is a Pt-porphyrin fluorophore that provides exceptional sensitivity to low levels of O2. The useful range is 0 - 5% O2 at 1 atmosphere pressure.
  • HIOXY  These probes are Ru based, have the same 0 - 100% O2 range but are especially formulated to work in hydrocarbons. They are especially good for use in fuels, alcohols etc.
